Can Harbor Guard go over wax or ceramic coatings?

No. Harbor Guard will not stick to ceramic coatings, wax, oily surfaces or surfaces covered in grease. Our Technical Data Sheet can be downloaded from the website to review the proper surface preparation before applying Harbor Guard.

Are there any restrictions on maintaining Harbor Guard's finish, like there are with ceramic coatings?

Ceramic coatings are very sensitive to soap pH, washing in the hot sun, and soaps that contain wax or other harsh chemicals. The use of these products can quickly destroy an expensive ceramic coating. Harbor Guard tolerates virtually any cleaning method. You can even clean it with acetone, and it won't affect the finish.

How many coats of Harbor Guard should I apply?

Harbor Guard is a two-coat system. We recommend applying two coats during the initial application for optimum coverage and protection. Typical coverage is 23–28 m²/L for the first coat and 30–35 m²/L for the second coat. Wait 24 hours before applying the second coat, and always follow the relevant Technical Data Sheet.

Will Harbor Guard fill in scratches or dings in my gelcoat?

Harbor Guard is topographic, meaning it adheres to the profile of the substrate and leaves a gloss finish. On older paint and gelcoat, Harbor Guard can highlight surface imperfections, although they will now be sealed off from the elements. Harbor Guard preserves whatever state of finish is achieved after proper preparation of the surface.

Do I need to apply wax over Harbor Guard?

No. Harbor Guard is the last coat over a properly prepared substrate.

No. Due to the nature of Harbor Guard's bonding mechanism, it will not peel or flake if it is applied properly.

Accepted Answer

Harbor Guard is not designed to be removed. When properly applied, Harbor Guard protects and seals off the substrate from the elements, producing a long-lasting, smooth, clear finish for five-plus years. Chemicals cannot remove the coating. If you make a mistake, you can remove it with acetone while it is still wet.
